Post mortem technique

Two interesting tricks I saw in a postmortem I just attended:

Take a poll via anonymous sticky note poll on the relative safety in the room:
4 - Secure: I can share everything
3 - Safe: I can share almost everything without filtering
2 - Neutral: I can share most of what I want to share without filtering
1 - Dangerous: I cannot share some of my important contributions in the room.
0 - Treacherous: I cannot share most of my important contributions in the room.

Then talk about what ground rules could be put in place to help this.  Then up/down thumb vote to confirm everyone agrees to abide by those rules.

The other was to do a Return on Time Invested (ROTI) at the end of the meeting:

5 - Awesome!
4 - Exceeded expectations
3 - Was worth the time invested
2 - Wasn't worth 100% of the time invested, but worthwhile
1 - Not worth my time

Getting an MP4 file to show on PS3 using USB drive

Two simple steps that got this to work for me:
- Make sure to put it in an folder on the USB drive, not at the root level
- Before diving into a submenu on the usb drive, select the drive at the movie level, click the green triangle for options and select Display All.  Then all the files showed up correctly.

Copying HTML tables to Excel

Forgot how I was able in the past to get complex web tables to properly get put into an Excel worksheet (my former MFL, aka Master Feature List).  I now remember, thanks to this post, that what I would do is:

  • Open the page in question in IE
  • Save locally
  • Add a stylesheet in the header to get the next step to work correctly
  • <STYLE type="text/css">
    br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}
    </STYLE>

  • Resave the local HTML page
  • Open the local HTML page in IE
  • Copy and paste from IE into Excel
  • Wha la, just what I wanted.

Finally got Dolby decoding working

The PS3 must be set to bitstreaming rather than Linear PCM for the receiver to detect the signal as dolby digital 5.1/DTS.

The menu item to adjust/verify is (from XMB): Settings: --> Video Settings --> BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI).

Arg...I had kept going to the audio menu, not the video one.  All fixed now.  Working with a PS3 slim.

Reset Brother 4150CDN toner count

Printer just stopped all of a sudden and said I needed to replace the toner, but I didn't see any toner degradation in any print outs.  Found this neat tip:

There has also been some negative comments about Brother colour laser printers refusing to print further once the page count for the toner has reached the perceived maximum with toner still available. This may be so but is easily sorted by resetting the toner count when needed. This is done through the toner reset menu found by simultaneously pressing the "secure" and "cancel" buttons on the printer whilst the toner door is open.

You actually want to press the secure button first, and while you're still holding that button then press the cancel button.

Best GAL solution for Android email

Goal: compose email and when typing into To field autocomplete not only with my local contacts, but also use information from the corporate GAL (global address list)

I used to use "Improved Email" but it got taken down from the Android market :(.  Fortunately there's a new app call Moxier Mail which does the same thing.  Phew...  K9 email never worked for me and not even TouchDown appeared to be able to do this simple thing.

Copy a wiki space in Confluence

Here's what worked for me:
* Copy the page and save
* If there are any embedded Gliffy documents fix links to them by going into the wiki source and removing the version reference - that fixes the issue
* Go to Edit and do the move to the new space from there (move menu item doesn't always seem to work)
* Do edit again and do a search for the old wikispace name (e.g., csarch) and delete that debris
* Do similar find/replace at the source level too once all docs have been ported over
* Go back to old page and put a link to the new page in the new space

Confluence attachment trick

By default if you use the WYSIWYG link tool in Confluence, the attachment links always show up with versions.  This can be a problem if you always want people to see the latest version of a document.  To get around that, go to the actual attachment view on the hosting page, copy the URL there and use that as a static HTML text link.

From then on, whenever you click that link you'll always get the latest version of that document.

Skipping that annoying announcement

You can skip the inane 15-second voice-mail instructions when leaving a message (“To page this person, press 5”) — if you know your friend’s cellphone carrier. If it’s Verizon, press * to cut directly to the beep. AT&T or Sprint, press 1. T-Mobile, press #. (Better yet: Do the world a favor and add this trick to your own greeting: “To cut to the beep, press 1.”)
